The AI outsourcing
Every AI company is selling you a shortcut to something. A shortcut to writing, a shortcut to coding, a shortcut to thinking. The pitch is always the same: do more, faster, with less effort. And on the surface, it sounds like progress. But underneath the productivity gains and the polished outputs, something quieter is happening. We are outsourcing the very thing that makes us capable, our ability to think.
The shortcut economy
Scroll through any AI product launch and you will notice a pattern. The value proposition is almost never "think more deeply." It is "skip the hard part." AI writing tools promise to eliminate the blank page. AI coding assistants promise to write your functions before you finish typing. AI meeting tools promise to listen so you don't have to. Each of these tools solves a real friction point. Nobody loves staring at a blank page. But friction is not always the enemy. The struggle of forming a sentence, of wrestling with a problem, of sitting in uncertainty long enough for an idea to emerge, that is where thinking actually happens. When every AI product is optimized to remove cognitive effort, the cumulative effect is not just convenience. It is a slow, steady transfer of intellectual labor from human minds to machines.
Cognitive offloading and why it matters
Researchers have a term for this: cognitive offloading. It means delegating mental tasks to external tools. We have always done this to some degree. Writing things down is cognitive offloading. Using a calculator is cognitive offloading. But AI represents a qualitative shift in what we are willing to hand over. A 2025 study published in Frontiers in Psychology proposed a taxonomy of cognitive offloading, distinguishing between assistive offloading (tools that support your thinking), substitutive offloading (tools that replace your thinking), and disruptive offloading (tools that actively undermine your ability to think independently). The concern is that many AI tools are drifting from the first category into the second and third. A collaborative study by Carnegie Mellon University and Microsoft Research found that heavy reliance on AI can measurably reduce a person's capacity for critical thinking, particularly when AI-generated content is accepted without review. The pattern is straightforward: if the AI output looks polished and sounds right, most people will not question it. Over time, the questioning muscle atrophies. As Lisa Bodell wrote in Forbes, "Think of using your brain like you use your legs. If you stopped walking and let a machine carry you around, your legs would eventually not work anymore. At first it would feel freeing. But eventually, you'd be unable to stand on your own."
The brain takes the path of least resistance
This is not about laziness, at least not in the way we usually think about it. The human brain is wired to conserve energy. When a shortcut is available, the brain will take it. This is adaptive behavior, not a character flaw. As Tim Requarth, a science writer and researcher, has noted, AI tools seem to "exploit cracks in the architecture of human cognition." The brain likes to save energy. A chatbot sits there offering to take over cognitive work. Accepting the offer is the natural, energy-efficient choice. The problem is that the natural choice is not always the beneficial one. Research on sustained attention and cognitive flexibility shows that frequent reliance on digital tools for thinking tasks makes it harder to maintain focus and adapt to new cognitive demands. The more we practice not thinking, the worse we get at thinking when it matters.
What we lose when we stop thinking
The costs of cognitive outsourcing show up in ways that are easy to miss. Convergent ideas. When everyone uses the same AI models to generate ideas, strategies, and content, the outputs start to look the same. Researchers call this "mechanized convergence," a flattening of perspectives across individuals and organizations that rely on the same tools. Weakened problem-solving. There is an irony of automation: by handling routine cognitive tasks, AI removes the regular practice people need to stay sharp. When a novel problem arises, one that the AI cannot solve or gets wrong, the person is less prepared to handle it than they would have been without the tool. Eroded agency. Studies on decision fatigue and cognitive overload already show how modern life drains our focus. Add AI dependency, and people risk becoming mentally passive, consumers of thought rather than creators of it. Over time, this can lead to decreased self-trust and a diminished sense of personal agency. Shallow engagement. When AI handles the hard parts of reading, writing, and analyzing, people engage with information at a surface level. They get the summary but miss the understanding that comes from doing the work themselves.
This is not an anti-AI argument
The point is not that AI tools are bad. Many of them are genuinely useful. The point is that the default mode of using AI, which is to accept the shortcut every time, carries a cost that most people are not accounting for. The distinction matters: using AI as a tool means you stay in the driver's seat. You use it to handle data-heavy tasks, to speed up repetitive work, to explore options you might not have considered. Using AI as a replacement means you hand over the wheel entirely. You stop forming your own opinions, stop writing your own first drafts, stop wrestling with hard questions. The difference between the two is not always obvious in the moment. But over months and years, it compounds.
How to keep thinking
If you use AI regularly, and most knowledge workers now do, there are a few practices worth considering. Write your first draft yourself. Use AI to edit or refine, but start with your own words. The act of generating ideas from scratch is where much of the thinking happens. Question AI outputs. Treat AI-generated content the way you would treat advice from a confident but sometimes wrong colleague. Check the reasoning. Look for gaps. Do not assume correctness because the output is well-formatted. Protect your hard-thinking time. Not every task needs to be optimized. Some tasks, especially creative and strategic ones, benefit from the slow, messy process of human thought. Give yourself permission to do things the hard way sometimes. Notice the pattern. Pay attention to how often you reach for AI before attempting something yourself. If the reflex is always to ask the machine first, that is worth examining.
The real product
Every AI company is selling you a shortcut. But the thing about shortcuts is that they skip the journey. And in cognitive work, the journey is the product. The thinking you do along the way, the connections you make, the understanding you build, that is what makes you good at what you do. Outsourcing your thinking to AI does not make you smarter. It makes the AI more useful and you more dependent. The companies building these tools have every incentive to make them indispensable. Your incentive is different. Your incentive is to stay sharp, to keep your cognitive muscles working, to make sure that when the machine gets it wrong, you are still capable of getting it right. The shortcut is tempting. But the long way around is where the thinking lives.
